PRODUCTION BEGINS ON NEW FOUR-HOUR NBC
MINISERIES “THE LAST TEMPLAR”
(April 7, 2008) -- Shooting began this week on “The Last Templar,” a four-hour event miniseries for NBC Television directed by Paolo Barzman and starring Oscar winner Mira Sorvino, Victor Garber, Scott Foley and Omar Sharif. The epic adventure will shoot in Montreal, with location shooting in Morocco. The production will wrap on June 21. Based on the best-selling novel by Raymond Khoury, the script for the miniseries was penned by Khoury and revised by Suzette Couture.
“The Last Templar” stars Oscar winner Mira Sorvino ("Mighty Aphrodite," “Mimic”) as Tess Chaykin, a Manhattan archaeologist who reluctantly teams up with FBI agent Sean Daley, played by Scott Foley (“The Unit,” “Felicity”). The pair are drawn into a fast-paced, romantic adventure as they attempt to uncover the lost secrets of the medieval Knights Templar. The miniseries also features Victor Garber ("Eli Stone”, “Alias”) as Monsignor De Angelis, high placed Vatican envoy. Veteran thespian Omar Sharif (“Doctor Zhivago”, “Lawrence of Arabia”) rounds out the all star cast. Sharif takes on the newly created role of Konstantine, a Greek wise man who rescues Sorvino and Daley’s characters after they are shipwrecked and wash up on the beach at Symi.
Muse Entertainment Enterprises is producing “The Last Templar.” Emmy Award-winning television impresario Robert Halmi Sr. ("Tin Man," "The Lion in Winter," "Gulliver's Travels"), Robert Halmi, Jr. ("The Poseidon Adventure," "The Christmas Card") and Michael Prupas ("Human Trafficking," "Durham County") will executive-produce the miniseries.
Irene Litinsky ("Human Trafficking," "The Wool Cap") serves as producer. Global TV will broadcast in Canada and RHI Entertainment and Powercorp will distribute the project worldwide.
"The Last Templar" opens in 1291with the fall of the Latin Kingdom's reign in the Holy Land in Acre. As the burning city is taken by the Sultan's forces, a lone galley escapes out to sea, carrying Martin of Carmaux, a young knight from the historic order of the Knights Templar. Also on the galley are Martin’s mentor, Aimard of Villiers and a mysterious chest entrusted to them by the Order's dying Grand Master. But the ship never reaches its destination.
Fast forward to present-day New York City. During a gala opening night for an exhibition of Vatican treasures at the Metropolitan Museum, Tess witnesses four masked horsemen, dressed as Templar Knights, storm into the Museum, scattering Manhattan society. Tess watches in silent terror as the leader of the horsemen hones in on one particular piece -- a strange geared device that he grabs as he disappears into Central Park.
As the horsemen's dead bodies start turning up -- and the importance of the stolen device becomes more apparent -- Tess and Agent Daley are drawn into the dark, hidden history of the crusading Knights and of the last surviving Templars' fateful journey from Acre. The pair is soon propelled into a dangerous adventure that takes them into the cemeteries and sewers of Manhattan, across continents, through desolate Turkish highlands and finally to a violent storm on the Mediterranean that shipwrecks them onto a remote Greek island -- and into the very heart of an incredible Vatican secret.
Sorvino, who won the Best Supporting Actress Academy Award for her performance in "Mighty Aphrodite" in 1995, first attracted attention for her work in such feature films as "Barcelona," "Quiz Show" and "Beautiful Girls." Most recently, Sorvino starred in Terry George's "Reservation Road." Her television movies include her Golden Globe-nominated role in "Human Trafficking" (which was also produced by Muse and RHI Entertainment-formerly Hallmark Entertainment) and starring roles in "Norma Jean & Marilyn" and "The Great Gatsby."
The six-time Emmy Award-nominated Garber starred as Jack Bristow in the series "Alias." His other credits have included "Ugly Betty" and "Will & Grace." His film credits include "Titanic," "Legally Blond" and "Tuck Everlasting."
Scott Foley is best known for his successful run as Noel Crane in the WB breakout series “Felicity,” in which he starred for four years. Since then he has had a regular role in the NBC comedy “Scrubs” and the CBS drama series “The Unit.” He also appeared in the wildly popular 2000 theatrical “Scream.”
Golden Globe winner Omar Sharif’s many credits include Sharif Ali in “Lawrence of Arabia,” the title role in “Doctor Zhivago” and alongside Barbra Streisand as Nick Arnstein in “Funny Girl.” In 2006 he played Jethro in the ABC/RHI Entertainment miniseries, “The Ten Commandments.” He can currently be heard as the narrator in the theatrical “10,000 B.C.”
